The Vosges mountains, an hour drive SE of Nancy, hosts charming lakes and easy to medium hikes in a splendid environment. Mountain range in eastern France near the Franco-German frontier between the départements of Haut-Rhin and Vosges. The Vosges forms the western edge of the Rhine rift valley. The Vosges is densely wooded; rivers flow down its slopes to the Rhine and to the central plateau of France.
Two hiking trips are already planned:
1- Hohneck
Honeck is the third highest peak in the Vosges mountain range. Situated at an altitude of 1364 m, the Hohneck overlooks the valley and its lakes, providing a wonderful opportunity to admire the Hautes Vosges, from the Donon to the Ballon d’Alsace, in addition to the Alsatian plain, the Black Forest and, further still, the Alps. The area is raked by strong winds, which provide a constant reminder of nature's supremacy.
The Alsatian part of the Hohneck has a distinctive Alpine character, as seen with the fauna and flora to be found here. Several herds of chamois live in close proximity to the Vosges cattle, which feed during the summertime on the grass growing along the Hohneck's gentler slopes. Glacial corries offer the perfect environment for lakes and peat bogs. (Text from http://www.tourisme-alsace.com/)
2 - Rouge Gazon
Situated int the Ballon des Vosges Regional Nature Park, Rouge Gazon offers several easy walks in various sourroundings
For both trip, you will need good walking shoes (avoid new shoes), rain protection, small back pack for your daily needs. A lunch will be provided.
