Important Notice:
We plan on raising funds toward reducing the fee for a limited number of PhD students registering to MetSoc meeting who are interested in participating to the field trip (Further information will soon be released on the website).
There is no specific risk with the excursion and the places visited.
The holiday village bears a variety of recreation activities including swimming pools that will be accessible to participants.
Accommodation is in the form of small chalets in beautiful nature. Due to constraints on the total number of chalets, single occupancy may not be possible.
The weather should be nice and warm, but not too hot. Yet those accustomed to live with air conditioning may not feel comfortable. Such technology is not widely spread in France and is completely “absent” from the 17th century housing of the Rochechouart area. Local restaurants, local accommodation, and local transportation may NOT be air conditioned.
The Rochechouart crater is rather flat (at a 10 km scale), but there may be need for a few walks on slopes.
Owing to the size of some sites and/or to the impossibility to access by bus, a significant amount of walking could be involved at some stops (up to 2,5 km). Walking is also required to join the TGV station at Futuroscope and at the TGV station trains may be over ½ km long.
Due to the variety of transportations involved, a number of loading and unloading operations will take place during the excursion. Participants should consider reducing volume and weight of their baggage accordingly.
As for other impact sites in the world, the area is now protected. A new law as of 2008 has established this geological site as a “National Nature Reserve” (website in french). As a consequence, the soil and outcrops are protected and sampling is not authorized. Yet during the excursion it will be possible to do so at some selected spots and specific needs will be satisfied upon request (contact Philippe Lambert).
The last but not the least, like in various other places in France, the area is well known for the quality of living, the richness and quality of eating and drinking… a pain for those on diet and a risk for those unable to handle “temptation”…
(More seriously, specific dietary requirements can be taken care of, of course, but must be indicated upon registration).
